Benefits of buying locally grown produce:
When you buy from Circle S, you're getting the produce at its peak form. When you buy produce from the supermarket, you're never sure how long its been sitting.
Most of the produce at large supermarket chains is typically grown hundreds of miles away and trucked in. The majority of fresh produce is grown in California, Florida or Mexico. The amount of fossil fuel used to ship the produce has an environmental impact. Produce will sit for days or up to a week before it’s delivered to the store. Often too, produce is picked before its ready, preventing it from reaching its nutritional potential.
Competing with large supermarkets is no easy task, because they buy large volume and at low prices. We are certainly not advocating running supermarkets out of business because they have a very good purpose.
A couple things to keep in mind when you are buying from your local farmer: the produce you buy will last longer once you get it home. Also, the health benefits are superior if comparing to a chain store, because the minute the fruit or vegetable is picked from the earth the nutritional value begins to decrease. We stock our produce house daily during the harvest season.
